THE ISSUES OF SEA GAMES 2019

The 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), commonly known as Philippines 2019, will be the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games, a biennial regional multi-sport event which will be hosted by the Philippines from 30 November to 11 December 2019. This will be the fourth time that the Philippines will host the games and its first time since 2005. This edition is most notable for being the first edition to include e-sports as well as having the highest number of sports in the history of the games, at 56.

The 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is supposed to showcase our Filipino Hospitality, the vibrancy of our progress and pride as one Nation but the incompetence of the Philippine South East Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) designated to provide a 30th SEA Game experience’ is tainting our image and they must act fast to provide solutions to problems besetting the SEA Games. The Games has yet to begin, but the Philippine Sea Games Organizing Committee have faced various controversies. From the P50 million cauldron, the ‘effortlessly designed logo and mascot and tarpaulins to the poor accommodation, logistics and facilities. Recently, news about the failures of the Philippine Sea Games Organizing Committee to accommodate Sea Games 2019Athletes of our ASEAN Member states have also reached international headlines with Fox Sports Asia calling these troubles “DISAPPOINTING AND EMBARRASSING FOR THE PHILIPPINES.” These shameless results are far cry from the expectations of that which a P6 Billion budget would have produced. It has exposed our Government’s incompetence. The failure of this government to act means the failure of the Filipino nation. The Philippine Sea Games Organizing Committee hosting the SEA Games, carries the burden of the Filipino pride as a Nation. Its success or failure reflects the Filipino legacy in the international stage. The troubles have been exposed and this is putting the Filipino people into shame. Unfortunately, there is no turning back. Just today, Cayetano pleads to stop the criticisms which he labeled 'bashing' as it is hurting the image of the country conveniently forgetting that problems arising from their incompetency are the ones hurting the image of the country. The news left and right, local and international hopefully, will put pressure on the government to act in the soonest possible time to alter the course of the SEA Games.

It’s a word that’s meant to bring people together, to be of service to our fellowman but let us remember, we are united in this celebration of sport, regardless of country, culture or color. For the 2019 SEA Games, let’s rally the Southeast Asian Nation to win as one!
